With my hands freed, though, I’m able to look around the room. I see that Angela’s left wrist is tied loosely with white string to Kai’s right wrist. She whispers to me that she can handle being bound only because she’s tied to Kai and because her right hand is free. She shakes her free hand. “I’m claustrophobic,” she says.
I understand. To some degree, I am, too. But my rope had been loose, and I knew my legs were free to stand and run.
I look behind me. I see two, tall, enviably skinny, fashionably dressed, gorgeous women—one dark-haired, one bleached blond and tattooed—sitting on the floor. Each leans blissfully against a knee of the Dominant they share. To my left, more women with the trademark chain and small silver padlock around their necks sit peacefully at the feet of their Dominants. They remind me of puppies happy to be sleeping on their masters’ shoes.
I make brief eye contact with others watching me before my attention is swayed to a woman speaking to Lady Sapphire. It’s not her words that grab me. It’s her tone. She sounds stoned. Yes, she says dreamily, the bondage worked on her—she’s transformed. Like a drug, it’s made her high. The room erupts into applause thanking Lady Sapphire for her seminar.
I grab a handout, thank Angela and Kai, race out of the room and to my car. I’m exhausted. I can’t believe I gave in and let myself be bound. My tires nearly squeal as I U-turn to get out of there.
At home, I glance down at Lady Sapphire’s handout and laugh out loud. “Copyright 1993 Michael Nelson,” it says. No wonder she feared I’d use “her” copyrighted material.
I stand, clasp my hands around the back of my neck, and hold my elbows together in front of me, just as Lady Sapphire suggested binding someone who can’t wear a blindfold. I bend and twist to see if I can see what’s going on around my body, if I could see someone striking me, as Lady Sapphire said I couldn’t. I can see everything.
“Obviously, I’m not bondage material,” I emailed a friend. “I must admit other sexual desires are rising, ones that I wish I didn’t have because shrinks tell me they are so unhealthy. Oh, well, thinking and acting are two different things. And I don’t even have the opportunity to act.”
